Danelectro Fab Tone Electric Fence
The Danelectro Fab Tone is a sleeper pedal that is highly under-rated due to some of it’s rather fizzy sonic qualities. But it’s such a good looking pedal that it deserves a place on your pedal board as a second distortion.
Straight out of the box the Fab Tone takes off where other distortion/fuzz pedals leave off. Unfortunately from there is only gets worse.
The pedal is plagued by too much screeching fizz and less balls than a gelding.
Can we fix it? Yes we can.
The ‘fix’ requires reworking the circuit with a few well placed tweaks.
The pedal is saved by having bass and treble controls so we can kick the bass up to give it some testicular fortitude and tidy up the fizz as well to bring the pedal back to earth.
Lower gain settings are now much cleaner as well.
To finish the job the clipping is changed to asymmetrical style to bring in a much richer distortion and better harmonics.
The pedal now becomes a controllable high gain monster which would sit well alongside another lower gain pedal like a DS1.
